Why do we have to flip our mattresses?

In the past mattresses were stuffed with whatever material that was readily available. During the Neolithic period, people used leaves, grass, hay, etc. to stuff their mattresses. Some have been known to use waterbeds, and the Egyptians slept on palm leaves. The Romans being smart, stuffed their mattresses with feathers, wool and hay. It took men so many years to finally make spring mattresses. These mattresses contained coils which help the bed to be in shape.

Some of the spring mattresses we have these days become worn out as the springs inside them become weak, and they lose their resilience and can no longer come back to their original shape. Such mattresses are known as sagging, and due to prolonged usage, they get worn out.

So what happens when your springs become saggy? You can fix the springs, but that is going to cost you as much as it would buy a new mattress. In order to prevent your mattresses from becoming saggy, you can do some necessary maintenance.

Rotating your mattress:

Turning your mattress at regular intervals can help you elongate the life of your mattress for a longer time. When you apply pressure only on one side of the mattress the springs might get damaged quickly but if you flip your bed, you will be applying the weight evenly, and you can prevent your bed from sagging easily.

How often should flip your bed?

When you buy a new mattress, the seller usually tells you to flip your mattress at least once a year. But most people ignore the advice provided by the salesman and sleep on the same side of the bed. Such people often complain about their bed wearing out sooner it is supposed to. It is said that when you flip your mattress at least once a year you can elongate its life by 5 to 7 years. The number of times you need to flip your mattress in a year depends on the number of people using the mattress.

How do you flip your mattress?

When you want to flip your mattress, you will have to turn it over, and you will be sleeping on the other side of the bedding. Remember that flipping your mattress and rotating your mattress is not the same thing. To flip your mattress, you need to rotate it to 90 degrees and raise the bed over the edge and slowly lower the mattress over so that the other side comes on top.

It is very important to have a good sleep. There are various factors which affect our sleep, and our mattresses play a significant role in helping us sleep. Thus, take the time once a year and flip your mattress to have a great sleep.
